- Hello. I have a question for those out there who are knowledgeable.
- I have a Penril Alliance V.34bis modem, and the problem I have been
- having is that this modem keeps disconnecting despite it being
- advertised as being able to handle all kind of noise.
-
- Anyways, I usually connect to Univ. of Chicago's modem pool for ISP
- service. I don't know what kind of modems they use, but I know I have
- had problems with them before when using SupraFAX 28.8 modems,
- Practical Peripherals PC288LCD, and Microcom Desporte Fast+ (lots of
- disconnect problems with all).
-
- Well, I remembered somewhere that some Rockwell chipset based modems
- had V.42 or V.42bis problems. So in case my university is using a
- Rockwell based modem, I tried limiting the Penril to use only MNP4.
- And guess what, I've been able to stay online now for >2 hours w/o a
- disconnect and still going.
-
- My question is, could this V.42 problem be what was causing the Penril
- and all the other modems I tried to keep disconnecting?
-
- Thanks.
